Area Banking Teams Host Successful NICU Book Drive

The Evansville and Owensboro Market banking teams held a successful book drive to benefit the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at two area hospitals.  Hundreds of children’s books were donated to Logan’s Library at Deaconess Women’s Hospital and Owensboro Health Regional Hospital’s NICU.

The Evansville and Owensboro Market banking teams held a successful book drive to benefit the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at two area hospitals.  Hundreds of children’s books were donated to Logan’s Library at Deaconess Women’s Hospital and Owensboro Health Regional Hospital’s NICU through the drive which took place during the month of October.

The drive, in its second year, has special meaning for Tell City team member, Stella Nelson.  During her son’s stay in the NICU when he was an infant, Stella found comfort in reading books to him.  Parents are often limited in the ways they can interact with their babies due to the various life supporting medical equipment. While she wasn’t always able to hold him, she could soothe him with her voice.  Logan’s Library gave her a way to easily find books without having to go and purchase or bring them in from her home.

Stella learned that October was Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Awareness month, and wanted to do something to give back to a cause that brought her joy during a difficult time.  She brought the idea for a book drive to her local leaders to see if German American Bank would be interested in supporting the cause.  As a result, the Tell City, Rockport, and Owensboro banking teams and customers were able to donate hundreds of books and comfort items in 2023.

In 2024, the Evansville area offices joined in collecting donations and they were able to surpass the number of books donated the previous year, filling several wagons.   Stella continues to lead the project and looks forward to potentially expanding it in the coming year.  Not only does the drive benefit families and their babies, it also brings awareness to a cause that affects so many in our community.
